As seen ALLL over my twitter feed:
A US District Court has ruled the a critical piece of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to be unconstitutional!

This is good news, but I wonder what sort of impact it will have. Evidently it comes from the Federal Government due to the DOMA treating some married Massachusetts couples different than other married Massachusetts couples.
I'd love it if this meant more states (& the Federal Government) recognizing and allowing same-sex marriage. That's not likely to happen immediately, but hopefully in a few years time it will. :)
Everybody should be allowed to marry the person they love.

Date: 2010-07-10 07:05 pm (UTC)Thing is that what the ruling actually says is that the federal government has no right to tell the states which marriages they can and can't recognize. Which means that a federal law requiring that same-sex marriages be allowed could well be overturned for the same reason - with this very case as the precedent.
