LAKE ELSINORE - Pop star/cosmonaut Lance Bass will make a tandem jump Friday over Lake Elsinore.
The 12,500 foot jump will be made with the U.S. Army Parachute Team the Golden Knights. Bass' orientation begins at 11 a.m. and the jump is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.
The Golden Knights have performed in all 50 states and in 47 countries, according to a news release. Annually the team performs more than 27,000 jumps before an estimated 12 million people.
Ninety men and women make up the team, which takes celebrities and notables on the tandem skydives as part of its demonstrations. In a tandem jump, the celebrity is attached to an experienced skydiver by a harness. The novice jumpers must attend a training session before the jump, said Staff Sgt. Mellissa Novakovich, spokeswoman for the Golden Knights skydiving team, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
The fall from 12,500 feet will reach speeds up to 120 mph, according to the release.
Bass was named 2003 youth spokesman Oct. 4 through 10 for Space Week International, a United Nations program.
The 'N Sync singer spent several months training at Russia's Star City and at Johnson Space Center in Houston to be part of a Russian crew that would fly to the International Space Station. Bass lost his seat on last October's flight after negotiations for the financing of his trip fell through.
