Sigh.

The two cats are not getting along.

Three months after bringing Mort inside they still hiss and spit and swat on a daily basis. And about twice a week they get into serious fights where the claws come out.

I'm ok with all of this. MrB can't stand it.

So Mort is now locked back up in the master bedroom/bathroom where he was when we first got him.

MrB thinks we introduced the cats to each other too quickly the first time around, so he thinks that if we separate them and re-introduce them then that'll just fix everything.

I think this is something we should try but I have no illusions that it'll magically fix everything. I think there will always be a some hissing/spitting and maybe swatting going on as these two cats did not grow up together.

I tried to suggest the possibility of some temporary medication for Maya - as she's so very skittish. The pattern of behavior seems to be Mort doing some dominance type things (hogging the water bowl, laying in the middle of doorways & hallway to prevent Maya from going by)... Maya is scared of Mort and hisses at him (but Mort doesn't really hiss back unless they're in a fight). Sometimes Maya hisses & swats at Mort and I think this causes Mort to react physically and a fight ensues. This is why I think if we were able to get Maya calmed down (via temporary medication) that the cats would start getting along and fights would decrease.

Once we completely try MrB's idea if they still aren't getting along *maybe* then he'll agree to temporary use of medication.

When Mort's locked up in the bedroom Maya is back to her usual curious explorative self. She's not herself when Mort's out and about. She doesn't go out and about and explore - she stays where she is and moves directly from one place she needs to be to another.

Sigh. I wish the two of them got along better/easier. MrB & I both really like Mort and don't want to give him up.

Maybe separating them for two weeks and then trying to re-introduce them will work. ::crosses fingers::
