Something I've been meaning to do for over a year - I finally went out and did it last night!
I bought a moderately nice (~$100 @ Kohl's) lined wool winter coat in a hurrya couple three years ago this fall (damn time flies). I bought it in a hurry for an outdoor fall wedding, and it was not a petite size. The length of the coat itself was fine, but the sleeves nearly reached the first knuckles of my fingers! And the back hem and gotten undone and instead of staying tucked up and being a hem, it just hung down.
So I took it to a seamstress/alterations lady.
For $20 she's going to shorten the sleeves by almost 2" and bring them up to about where my thumb is. For $15 she's going to go inside the lining and do a blind hem and reinforce the bottom hem so it doesn't come undone again.
$20 to shorten sleeves of a lined coat! :D
It'll be ready in a week. If I like how it turns out, I'm going to be MUCH less hesitant about buying non-petite clothes. :)
