Kitty is ours! :D
Jul. 6th, 2009 10:22 pmIsn't he adorable? :D
His name's Mort. :) Short for Mortimer.
Vet said he's probably 3 or 4 years old, and actually has been neutered even though it doesn't look like it from the outside. He's negative for all the nasty kitty diseases, and there was no microchip to be found. We had him get all his shots, and when he goes back next month for the boosters he'll get microchipped. The poor baby was just too vocal/traumatized for them to also do the microchipping today. We did go out and get him a collar and a tag, though. :)
He's a VERY vocal kitty, but also very laid back (the vet said his heart rate wasn't even up, and that was at the vet's office - the most feared place of almost all pets)!
He knows how to use a litter box, though still scarfs food down like it's never going to be seen again. I fed him about a half-cup around noon, and another half-cup this evening. At noon he ate every last kibble. This evening he actually left some in his bowl!
He and Maya are getting to know each other. I'm VERY happy to report that earlier this evening Mort was laid out & relaxed on the bed, and Maya came into the bedroom, but stayed near the door. They hissed at each other, but Mort didn't leave his comfy position at all. Maya laid down (with her paws tucked underneath her and everything), and they were both there in the same room not growling or hissing at each other or anything!
Maya eventually walked up over to the bed where Mort was, and he hissed at her and she turned around and left! Because Mort's a more vocal cat something tells me he's going to end up being the dominant cat around here. Though I hope he & Maya get along and she doesn't end up being more skittish of a cat!
The vet said that because they were probably both around the same age that it would actually take them a bit longer to get adjusted.
We're going on vacation in mid-September, and already have Maya booked at a cattery. Either we're going to pay for two individual rooms, or one larger shared room. OH! I just remembered! They have some individual rooms that have a connecting door between the two rooms. That I think would be ideal for them. They'll have their own private space, but will be able to hang out together (assuming that by that time they'll be getting along nicely).

Date: 2009-07-07 06:44 am (UTC)One thing I don't know if you know about; cats are territorial, and new cats can be big stresses to established cats and cause depression in them. Giving Maya lots and lots of extra love and attention and snuggles will help prevent that.
Yay for your bigger family!!!!
