In the process of de-cluttering my living room, and sorting through my books to go to storage or be donated, McCaffrey's Pern and all of my Mercedes Lackey books are NOT going anywhere! :) Mostly the good classics that will someday go in our library room are going in storage, and almost all of the other miscellaneous fiction books are being donated. Finishing the task of boxing up the books for storage is my big goal for this weekend. That and then possibly moving some of those boxes into our new larger storage unit.

So I had an appointment with my regular Dr on Monday to talk about the idjit Dr at the 'sleep solutions' center who could only tell me I didn't have apnea. My dr said ignore what he said about Ambien, and do NOT take it more than 2 or 3 times a week. He recommended I try melatonin first and then would give me a Rx for an old anti-depressant that's a good sleep aid at low doses.
I'm thinking my Dr didn't quite understand my particular sleeping trouble because melatonin is good for helping one get to sleep, but that's NOT where I have trouble. My trouble is that I wake up a whole bunch during the night and spend about a third of my night wavering back and forth between barely awake and barely asleep. So I tried the melatonin, and of course it didn't work for my problem so I called my Dr and he called in a rx for Trazodone. I've tried it 2 nights now, and I'm just not so sure I like it. The first night it gave me a really nasty headache about the same time it started to kick in and make me drowsy. Then I was groggy/tired until around 1pm the next day.
I took it last night but I took it a bit too late (it takes an HOUR to kick in, so I'm supposed to take it an hour before bed, and I KNOW I'm going to have tons of trouble with that). So it was torture to get out of bed, but that seems to have improved a bit as the morning has progressed (though like yesterday morning, I do have a bit of a headache that I don't normally have). I'll give it a few more nights, but I think the problem for me is going to be the headaches and not remembering to take it an hour before bed. The ambien worked fairly well... it didn't quite help me sleep after 4am, but the rest of the night it worked well (the Ambien CR would probably work better after 4am, but neither of them can be taken daily).

What I really want to try is Lunesta, and I asked about it but my Dr mentioned it was relatively new & very expensive and wants me to try this trazodone stuff first.

i would seriously ask your dr about benadryl. when we first got dxed in 1997 that is what the dr rxed for sleep. he said it has fewer side effects than anyof the rx meds and is one of the only meds that doesnt cause a "hangover" sort of thing in lots of ppl in the morning. and itis used a lot of times at hospitals to help ppl sleep.

at that time he said up to 200 mgs (that is EIGHT benadryls!) but really 2 works most nights, and except when i am crashed i sleep thru the night on it. i wake up feeling good most fo the time, too. someties i do wake up after 4 hours, and i take 1-2 more then. i get dye free cause the dyes make me itch and break out in little bumps.

another thing that helps me LOTS is the finger holding exercise here in the naturalliving comm http://community.livejournal.com/naturalliving/534099.html

If this trazodone stuff doesn't end up working out for me, I'll give this a try. I'm going to give it a week, and if the side effects I don't like are still around I'm going to stop using it.
