It's no use.

My mind is simply jumping ALL over the place today. I have a gazillion different things that need doing (work stuff, wedding planning, physical therapy exercises, vision therapy exercises, house cleaning, exercising, and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting).
Work stuff also encompasses something I need to do at home (because there's no time to do it at work).

I use SQL queries to get data for various reports out of a database we use to track files that go through the office. I barely know how to take the query text that the guy who use to do the queries gave me and change the date to the new report period. Well after a long leave of absence (during which we paid him a nominal sum for his ongoing help/consultation of this & other things) he's made his departure permanent.
So now I'm on my own with this. And there are other statistics that he used to be pull out of the database, that we still need to be able to get, but no one knows how. I can change the dates on the existing queries, and take bits from other queries to sort of guess my way into figuring out how to do things), but I can't write my way out of a paper bag.

I recently found a $90 online class through my local community college that is an Introduction to SQL. I mentioned it off hand to my boss and I've never seen him so encouraging/excited! He told me to go run down and immediately sign myself up for it using the company credit card.

So that class started yesterday, and I have stuff I have to read, an assignment to do, and a quiz to take. I'm looking forward to the class as I think it'll be very useful for me. It'll also be a good thing to have on my resume as a LOT of accounting & other software is SQL based and it'll be nice to know the how the language underneath works.

Maya is adjusting beautifully to our house. She's starting to play with some of the toys we bought her, and she's *really* taken with the cat bed we bought her (it's saving the blankets from a LOT of cat hair).

I haven't vacuumed yet, and pre-Maya I didn't need to very often, but now I'm thinking it's going to need to become a much more frequent activity.

I still need to find a plan B reception location (in case the county park we have reserved ends up being shut down due to budget cuts).
Also still need to go talk with the stationary place and get started on making up wedding announcement cards and reception invitation cards (the people coming to the ceremony itself are so few in number that we're just going to make those ourselves).
HTB is SO stressed & busy with work & school that we haven't had time to do our wedding registry! We managed to get started at one store (Bed Bath & Beyond) but we only had an hour so we need to go back and finish up there. We're also going to go to Target.
Other thing on the list is to call the seamstress recommended by the bridal shop and get my dress altered.
I'm sure there's more.

Did I mention how jumpy my brain was today?

In other news the physical therapist says my knee is healing well! :) Nothing will make the awful creaky noises go away, but with the stretching of the hamstrings, and the strengthening of the inner thigh muscles, I can make my kneecap track properly so it won't get any worse. Evidently years of my kneecap not tracking properly have shredded up the underside of my kneecap, which is why it makes such awful noises when I squat or go down stairs, and which is why it always aches.

Physical Therapy is a fabulous invention! :)

Vision therapy was just started (my 2nd visit is on Monday), and I'm hopeful it'll be just as fabulous.
My eyes both cross inwards a bit. I have prisms in both my glasses to help with this (because since my eyes can't point together in the right way, they move the light to where my eyes are). And evidently I'm at the point where they don't want to add any more prism because my eyes/muscles will just gobble it up like a crutch, and then they'll just need more (and there is a physical limit to how much prism they can put in, and I'm getting close).
So the vision therapy is supposed to help my eyes learn how to work together better. I'm hoping it'll make my headaches go away (from my eyes trying, but not really knowing how, to keep images from going double). I'm hoping it'll also help me reduce the amount of prism I need or at least keep me from ever needing any more. I see double without my glasses and occasionally when I'm really really tired.
Each year or two when they have to increase my nearsightedness prescription my eyes want to cross even more. My old eye Drs just added more prisms and sent me on my way. But this one was the one that said wait a minute, we're going to be in a really bad spot soon.
So with the vision therapy.

And my goodness am I rambling today!
I should get back to work, but reading & posting to LJ is SO much more fun! :)

That's what my knees do!!! And they don't track properly, never have! What sort of exercises have they given you??? I feel like mine are deteriorating rapidly.

Soooo cute that Maya is loving her bed, and getting used to her home. Does she purr for you? Post more pics when you can :) (as if you're not busy enough!) If she's skittish at all, be prepared for her to hide out when you vacuum... mine would disappear for hours in the beginning... they're brave now :)

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

The one she just gave me today is one that she said was the best one to do and will take the place of all the others they've been having me do.

This can be done freestanding, but I had severe balance issues trying to do that, so I'm doing it leaning up against a door (smoother & easier to slide on).

Lean with your back against a door, and your feet about one foot out from the door. Shift your center of gravity so you can balance on one foot. Hold the other foot out in front of you, but not touching the ground.
Slowly lower yourself into a partial squat, sliding down the door. This helps strengthen all the muscles of your lower thigh which for me will help pull my kneecap back into proper alignment.
I was told to focus on the inner thigh muscle that's just above & on the inside thigh side from my kneecap. For me this muscle is weak which is why my kneecaps are out of alignment. Looking down at my knees, my kneecaps are tilted. They tilt in such a way that if a line were to be drawn across the flat plane of the top, looking downward that line would point backward. There is more space between the side of the kneecaps and the bone underneath on the inside than the outside of each leg.

Stretching of the hamstring will make the small gap on the outside increase, and strengthening of the inner thigh muscle will make that large gap narrow. The stretching involves using a yoga band (http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/95-9098_MSTR), holding one end of the band in each hand with my foot in the middle. Laying on my back I use the band to help hold & stretch my leg straight up, then to each side, making sure to keep my hips flat on the floor/bed & not tilted off the ground. She told me to hold each stretch for 8 breaths, and to do the stretches once a day.

She said I can't stop the crunchy/creaking/grinding without a surgeon going in and physically scraping down the shredded underside of my kneecap back to a normal surface (and my knees aren't NEAR bad enough to warrant that, and besides I'm still only a few months shy of 30, not near old enough for it to be time for that kind of procedure). But the strengthening and stretching can move my kneecap into the proper position so it tracks properly and doesn't get any more ground up than it already is. :)
My physical therapist also said an elliptical exercise machine would be great for my knees. I have a small portable one at home, it's an Orbitrek. So after that word of encouragement from my therapist I dug it out of the closet and logged 20 minutes on it tonight (first real exercise I've gotten in months)! I feel so proud!

And as an aside I frequently refer to HTB in my posts. HTB = hubby-to-be, my finace whom I live with. We're getting married in June. We've been engaged for nearly 2 years already, and the time has just FLOWN by!

Good luck with your own knees!

I'd love to be able to edit comments...
"first real exercise"

First conscious workout I've attempted in months (aside from walks at lunch & on weekends with a friend)

Gosh! Thank you so much for writing such a detailed answer - I appreciate it greatly!!! I'm going to do the exercises too (I happen to have a yoga band, not that I've used it in ages) and my sister has an elliptical machine so when I visit there (an hour away, but a great excuse to go see my little 3 year old niece Samantha, adopted from China two years ago! I'll have to show you pics sometime) I'll hop on and do that too. Excellent!

You must be so excited about the wedding! I can't imagine how much there must be to do to get ready. Have fun, and please give Maya a pet from me :)
