My dad's appendix removal surgery went spectacularly well!

Just 3 little holes. And all he needed was just regular over-the-counter bandages! He was out of surgery around 9:30am, back in his room a little over 30 minutes after that.

When the Dr came around at 2:45 she said he was doing so well that he could go home! It took another hour and a half after that though before we were actually able to leave the hospital (paperwork & everything being what it is). They arrived at the ER at 1am, and so it was about 15 hours from initial arrival that he went home. Not quite out-patient surgery, but damn close!

This minimally invasive surgery stuff is fabulous!

When I had my appendix out 15 years ago I had a little 2" incision, and was in the hospital for 3 and a half days. The first day I couldn't even sit up on my own, and even the thought of trying to walk & move around was excruciating! I think I did manage to shuffle to the bathroom & back. But it was another day before I was able to walk any distance. We went on our regularly scheduled camping trip 2 or 3 weeks after my surgery and I remember the torture of trying to change my big ass gauze & waterproof tape bandages in the showers at the campground.
I was also on a liquid diet for 48 hours, and a modified easy-to-digest diet after that for another couple days.

My dad on the other hand, got water & jello just long enough for the nurse to determine he wasn't nauseous & his stomach was tolerating the jello & then he got a full & complete & normal lunch at 12:30!

On one hand I'm absolutely thrilled that it all went so easy for him.
On the other, I'm insanely jealous!

That is wonderful news! Laproscopic surgery is an amazing thing, isn't it? They didn't let me go home the day of my gall bladder surgery, but I was home the next day

It's incredible!!

A co-worker was telling me how gall bladder surgery used to involve an incision from sternum to spine - a complete semi-circle. And now they can do the same thing with just a few holes!!

Amazing stuff!
