and so life continues...
Sep. 20th, 2005 12:13 pmIt seems like things have just been plodding along. Nothing really exciting or interesting going on. Boring is good sometimes (as that old chinese curse will tell you). I think I'm just bored with being sick.
Still trying to get over this darn cold. It's been a long time, thankfully, since I've had a cold knock me out for weeks like this one has. I'm looking at 2 & a half weeks, and I probably have another week to go before I'm 100% back to normal.
I had a *very* strange urge to do some fall cleaning this past weekend. I cleared off piles all over the house! The kitchen counter, the living room desk, the spare dresser... I was very productive! I even vacuumed the apartment!
Semi-exciting news (for me) was my coworker/friend E telling me she & her husband are expecting their first baby sometime in May/June of next year! This is the first time I'll get to watch a close friend go through a pregnancy & everything, and I'm really quite excited about the whole thing and being able to experience it vicariously. :D E's husband doesn't want anything to do with anything that has to do with the word 'shopping'. So I volunteered myself as moral support & shopping buddy for E when the time came to look for both baby furniture & maternity clothes. Shopping with someone else's money is always fun! And this is going to be even more so, since I don't go shopping for those kinds of thing every day.
HTB & I are having fun sketching out what our honeymoon plans are going to look like. Nothing better than daydreaming & planning out a vacation! Especially such a wonderful/amazing/once-in-a-lifetime type of vacation as a honeymoon!
When I got out of college, and joined the professional/business world, I remember finding it odd when I got mail or things that referred to me as Ms [last name]. Then I had my stepdad adopt me and I took his last name, and I got used to that (which actually didn't take much time at *all*). And now I'm wondering how long it'll take me to get used to being Mrs [new last name]. I'm glad I have a while to throw the name around in the back of my head to try and get used to hearing it. At least I've done all the name-changing stuff before so I won't have to worry about figuring all that stuff out.
For someone who started this entry talking about how boring life was & wondering if she actually had enough stuff to talk about to bother with making a LJ entry, this is really nice long stream of babble.
For those of you who're married (& changed your name)... how long did it take you to get used to your new name?
How long before you didn't look around to see who they were asking for when they called out Mrs [hubby's last name]?
And how long did the fun novelty last of getting to say "my husband & I" instead of "my finace & I" or "my boyfriend & I"?

Date: 2005-09-20 08:40 pm (UTC)The kittyboy was the one to change his last name when we married, since he didn't like having his estranged father's name anyway. He got used to it very quickly (despite getting razzed a bit for being the one to change names -- I guess the Air Force wasn't used to that idea then *g*) -- I think it helped that he really likes his new name. He changed his middle name at the same time, since that was easy to do at the same time back then. (His initials are PMS now, so I have the excuse that I *always* have pms...*eg*)
I don't know if it's a novelty, but it's still fun saying "my husband" after 11 years.
?!
Date: 2005-09-21 02:36 am (UTC)A) A man *willingly* changed his initials?
B) A man *willingly* took the initials of "PMS"?
I would take away two things from this:
1) I can see why he was "nervous in the service", so to speak. I would wager that he was pestered on more than one occasion about "fit of his pants". Which brings me to...
2) Your man must *really* love you to go through this. Committment and flexibility are wonderful things to have walking into a marriage. I hope mine works out as well as yours :)
(And for those who don't know... I'm Rosebee's HTB)

Date: 2005-09-21 08:55 pm (UTC)I'm curious why you think he must have been nervous? He wasn't nervous at all about it -- happy and excited at the change, yes. Nervous? Not in the slightest. He found it immensely amusing that other people had issues with it, since it was something he was doing that made him happy. The California DMV was all astir when we went in with the marriage license to make the change -- evidently our office had never had a man change his name before, but the rules said all you needed was the marriage license, which we had, so they did it, with much confusion. The Air Force found it confusing too, but did it.
But yes, he really loves me. Going through me becoming too ill to work, several odd diagnoses and then having multiple brain injuries (including several years of memory loss) while staying firmly by my side is pretty damned good proof of that. *g*

I'm also a bit curious about where the assumption of nervousness came from...

Date: 2005-09-21 02:46 am (UTC)Cool! That's very good to hear!! :)
Men aren't usually the ones to change their name, it's very cool that he did. He must get a good laugh every now and then with the combination of initials he now has! If I were in his shoes I think I would've done the same thing.
And just because I feel like it...
