My mom's estranged sisters (they're twins) found me on Facebook today. My mom only speaks to them by email. The last time she saw one of them in person was well over 10 years ago (and at that time it'd been a decade or two since the last visit).
I don't think I've ever met either of them in my life (which is why they're "my mom's sisters" and not "my aunts".
I accepted their friend requests, but as they have been known to tell family members to give them money (instead of taking a brief vacation, or buying a spouse or child a birthday gift, etc), I'll be keeping them on a short leash.
My mom feels like she's getting old. She just turned 60, but she has troubles medically (Bipolar II depression & fibromyalgia) so she frequently feels older than 60. I'm becoming aware of her changing self-identity because she's now all of a sudden concerned that I make connections with these sisters of hers. She also is overly-encouraging (almost to the point of nagging) to make sure that I stay on good friendly terms with my brother & our half-sister.
I tolerate my brother, and am VERY glad he lives 6 hours away. My sister & I are very close however & we're good friends. We'd be better friends if we lived closer.
These 'aunts' of mine, I don't know, don't really want to know, and don't really care if they disappear from my life tomorrow.
