I have my sewing class in an hour and 15 minutes (luckily it's VERY close by). And I'm going to be making this knit dress.

I'm really excited, and I hope it comes out ok!

When I was cutting out the pattern, the wonderful instructions only metioned the fast/advanced method for marking the notches that help the pieces line up to one another (it just said to snip the fabric a bit at the notches). Later I learn it's recommended that begining sewers instead cut outward around the notch in the shape of a triangle or rectangle. Oh well. Something to remember for next time. At least I have a teacher to help me figure out how to put the pattern pieces together.
The other hard part about this is because I'm using a cotton interlock knit, both sides of the fabric look the same! So I'm going to need the teacher to help me figure out which way the pattern pieces go (inside vs outside fabric side).

I should go shower and get ready. Pictures to come when it's all done!

So the sewing was a success. I sewed the size needed to fit around my 34DD chest... which meant that the shoulders ended up WAAAYYYY too big.

See? )

But for my first garment, I think I did pretty good. I should've made the petite adjustment before I cut out my fabric, but when I looked at the pattern pieces, I thought to myself, WOW those are really short, I don't think I should make them any shorter. But lo and behold, after I got all the things cut and put together, they weren't so short after all, and I really should've made the adjustment. Maybe then the drop waist might've actually come within an inch or so of my actual waist.

And the armholes were either way too big or too deep or something, because you could easily see my bra through them when I held my arms up.

My next project is this one. (view F - the one in the lower left-hand corner).
This one should actually fit me, as it comes with pattern pieces already sized for a D cup. Granted, I'm a size up from that, but it should be close enough. I think there's enough extra room (ease?) in the dress that it'll work just fine. I think this time, I'm going to see about tracing out enough sides of the pattern pieces so I can reinforce the tissue paper and then pin it together and try it on *before* I cut it out onto my fabric.

I wish my first dress fit me better, because then I'd actually be able to wear it. But it was a good learning project, and I'm going to keep it just so I can refer to it (as an example of just exactly why I should always take the time to do a full bust adjustment on a pattern).
