Tips found at this InsaneJournal post:

File>Server Settings - this is where you put dreamwidth.org or www.livejournal.com (both use port 80), then your actual username & password that the client will log you in as.

In the main window where it says 'username' this MUST be two different things in order to cross-post to two different journals.

Here's my setup:

Livejournal:
ServerSettings= www.livejournal.com, port 80, my username & password (the same as what I use at the website)
The logon window I have "rosebee-lj" then my real password

Dreamwidth
Serversettings = dreamwidth.org, port 80, my real username & password (again same as at website)
The logon window I have "rosebee" then my real password.

In the login box in the main window, this is where you can put a username for whatever. LJ was happier about accepting a different username here than DW was.

Then when the client is open, go to the Journal menu, then "Post to Multiple Journals". After doing the above steps I now see "rosebee-lj" and "rosebee". I've checked the box, and if I was successful this post should go to both places!

::crosses fingers::

Before I hit the magic button: Something I've noticed - if I have the LJ journal selected in the drop-down menu of the client, I get options for entering tags & my locations. Once I switch my 'current journal' to the DW name (they show up in the list as rosebee-lj and rosebee), I don't get these two fields. Strangeness.
